Cyndi Smith, is the owner of Innovative Fabric Creations in Windsor.   We do custom fitted slip covers, pillows, bed and window coverings, and even repairs! 

Slipcovers are just what the name implies — a fabric cover that "slips" over an existing piece of upholstered furniture. The upholstery is left intact, and the slipcover fits over it — either loosely, like a throw that gets tucked in and tied to create a shape, or custom-measured and fabricated so that it looks like a brand new upholstery job.  "Every piece is custom-fitted — the backs and bodies and cushions are all treated separately. The finished result can look just like upholstery."

Innovative Fabric Creations is celebrating working with North Bay consumers for the last nine years by making a first time appearance at this year’s Fall Home and Garden Show at the Sonoma County Fair Grounds.

Innovative Fabric Creations is owner operated by Cyndi Smith in Windsor . Cyndi’s passion for sewing began many years ago as a young girl back when Home Economics and Sewing were a mandated part of a school’s core curriculum. Cyndi could often be seen in her early years sporting skillfully crafted clothing she made for herself. At the age of 16, she completed her first set of “pinch-pleat” drapes which she proudly displayed in her parent’s home. Cyndi’s interest in sewing has grown and blossom since this time, providing her with a wide range of experience and expertise.

After spending many years in the corporate world and then having two children, Cyndi decided to combine her love for sewing and business skills and in 1993 began her own “home-based” business, “Innovative Draperies.” The business was located in Salinas , Ca. focusing on providing window coverings and treatments for prospective clients.

In 1994, a client requested a slipcover be designed for a chair to be used in her daughter’s upcoming wedding. At this time instructional books and or videos on slipcovering were not readily available, but with a little hard work and resolve, Cyndi was able to accomplish the task and made her first slipcover! Cyndi was inspired and began teaching herself the art of slipcovering, beginning with sheets on her own furniture and by consulting with professionals in the upholstery industry.

1995 resulted in a move for Cyndi’s family to the Town of Windsor and a new name for her business “Innovative Fabric Creations” specializing in custom fitted slipcovers.  Cyndi is a current member of the “Slipcover Network”, a network of associations for slipcover professionals around the Untied States and attends slipcovering classes/seminars dedicated to perfecting the craft of slipcovering.   

Innovative Fabric Creations has grown considerably since its conception. What started as a “part-time” endeavor matured rapidly into a respectable, well known business focusing on perfection and client satisfaction. Work from Innovative Fabric Creations has been proudly displayed in “Marin Designers Showcase Homes” in 2001 and 2002. Additional works were featured in an article, “Hidden Treasures” in the Fall 2004 addition of a∙bōde’ Magazine, a magazine published quarterly in the North Bay providing a variety of inspirations for home owners.

A question typically asked is why slipcovers? and the answer is simple, versatility. Slipcovering can be less expensive than reupholstering or replacement of your favorite chair, sofa or lounge.
